Q.
Just who do we think we are?
Young Filmmakers + Channel Free is Metro Screen’s
youth media access programme, funded through theDepartment
of Education, Employment & Workplace Relations and Metro
Screen.
Young Filmmakers workshops + Channel Free projects are for
11-16 year olds with a serious interest in video + new media
production. Our facilities + training are industry based,
which means you will have hands-on learning with professional
equipment. We also work with young people who fall out of
our 11-16 age range, however if you are over 18 you should
check out Metro Screen's main training program.
Young Filmmakers + Channel Free has been providing youth
media access for more than 15 years + remains the only service
of it’s kind in Australia. Channel Free is internationally
networked + has a long festival prize winning history. Young
Filmmakers + Channel Free has over 300 young people as part
of it’s inner city network + consider all Young Filmmakers
+ Channel Free producers to be the ants pants. All Channel
Free staff + tutors are crazy about video production + new
media + love to encourage young people to be a part of Australia's
screen industry.

Q. Why won’t we return your
calls right away?
The Projects Coordinator operates two days a week, usually
Wednesday and Thursday. If we are not in the office to take
your call, we could be out networking with the community
or running a workshop. Often the best way to get hold of
us is via email: channelfree@metroscreen.org.au

Q. How can you participate
in of our workshops/projects?
Young Filmmakers workshops run every school holidays and
participants are selected through a simple application process.
Sometimes the workshops are open to everyone, sometimes
the workshops are only open to young people with an advanced
knowledge of video production. Once on the Young Filmmakers
+ Channel Free database, you will be notified of any opportunities
available to participate in one of our workshops. Email
your name + snail mail address to us so we can send you
workshop info. Also check our website for news about upcoming

Q. What about the free workshops/projects?
Young Filmmakers offers two free places on each workshop
to disadvantaged young people. Channel Free (through funding
from the Commonwealth Department of Family + Community Services
+ Metro Screen) conducts free projects/workshops for 11-16
year olds, mainly targeting marginalised youth communities
who live in, go to school or use services in the South Sydney
area.
If you have a group of friends who want to make a video
together, or are a youth worker in the South Sydney area
interested in Channel Free coming out to your youth centre,
email your request to us so we can see if we are able to
plan a workshop for you. If you are from a youth service
or council with a client group over the age of 16, you might
want to check out Metro Screen's Mobile Unit.

Q. What happens in a workshop/project?
Young Filmmakers workshops + Channel Free projects have
had various outcomes over the years. Often each group, under
the guidance of an industry professional tutor, produces
a completely finished film, starting from scratch, coming
up with a concept/story, scripting it, planning the shoot,
shooting it (on location or in our green screen studio),
editing it in professional edit suites and outputting it
to DVD. The films are screened at the Chauvel Cinema + entered
into inter/national film/video festivals.
Workshop/Project participants have access to full camera
kits including Sony cameras | shotgun microphones | tripods
| Redhead lighting kits, a green screen studio + Final Cut
Pro edit suites.
Some workshop/project activities also include new media
production, basic web-design and specific competency based
excercises. The workshops usually run over three consecutive
days from 10am to 4pm. Project time frames vary according
to the nature of each project, eg. five hours/week for six
weeks.

Q. How much will a workshop
cost me?
Young Filmmakers workshops cost $295 (incl.GST) per student
(with two free places available upon application). Channel
Free projects are subsidised through Metro Screen, usually
in conjunction with a partner from the youth services sector
to ensure greater access for young people to industry equipment
+ training.
High-gloss brochures aren't important to Young Filmmakers
+ Channel Free – we know our workshops/projects are
good so we keep our advertising material lo-fi to pass the
casholla benefits on to keeping workshop fees down to add
to your training experience.
