KIDS KLUB & LINKS TO LEARNING WEB-INFO |
In
2007, Channel Free, in partnership with South Sydney Youth
Services, delivered two Supported Training Projects in video
production to around twenty young people involved in the
Links to Learning and Kool Kids Club programs. The participants
ranged from 11 to 17 years of age and represented a wide
variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The outcome
is three finished short films, conceived and produced by
the young people under the guidance of Channel Free’s
tutors, using equipment and facilities provided by Metro
Screen and with funding from FaHCSIA. The films, ‘Breakdancer’,
‘The Trick or Treaters’ and ‘Ganglands’
will be screened at the Chauvel Cinema in Paddington later
in 2008. Channel Free is proud to have played a part in
the development of these young people, having provided them
with an opportunity to express themselves through the medium
of film and exposing them to modern video technology they
would not normally have access to.

PROJECTS |
In
partnership with GLYSSN who provide support and a range
of educational and recreational groups, events and projects
for same sex attracted and gender diverse young people (up
to 25) in the St George and Sutherland areas. Channel Free
will make a short film project exploring the circumstances
and issues confronting same sex attracted and gender diverse
young people in Sydney.
In partnership with South Sydney Youth Services & Short
Black Films, Channel Free will produce a short film to be
screened outside of competition at TropJr ‘09, TropFest’s
Junior Film Festival.
Short Black Films is an initiative launched three
years ago by Vincent McManus as a pilot project funded through
the City of Sydney Council’s Safe City Department.
Short Black Films is based at the Redfern Community
Centre. Its aims are to give the Aboriginal community and
disadvantaged young people the opportunity to have a voice
and tell their own stories through short films. It enables
the people involved to work with an experienced film production
crew, to gain some of the skills and confidence to work
in film and television, to submit their films to festivals,
to be broadcast on television and to establish a sense of
local identity and pride.
