CHANNEL FREE
combine to form Metro Screen’s
youth programme, providing access to digital film technology,
training and mentorship for young people aged 11 –
16. Metro Screen runs school holiday workshops and special
projects in filmmaking and is the leading youth film training
and production facility in Australia. Our programmes are
industry based, which means you will have hands-on learning
with professional equipment and experienced tutors.

Metro Screen
and TropJr put Redfern's youth on the silver screen
Working with disadvantaged youth in Redfern, Metro Screen’s
Channel Free has partnered with TropJr to produce a short
film to screen out of competition at the 2009 festival.
“This project provides the youth of Redfern with
a national platform to express their creativity through
short film while adding to the richness of the TropJr event
and expanding its accessibility to a cross section of youth.”

SCHOOL HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS
Young Filmmakers runs extensive workshops in digital
film production during the January, April, July and October
school holidays. The three-day intensive workshops enable
participants to write, act, shoot, light, direct, edit and
produce their own films. Participants will join an established
collective of over 300 young Sydney filmmakers and become
part of the Young Filmmakers community, receiving regular
updates and invites to screenings and special events.
An added touch of glamour and excitement for the school
holiday workshops have seen participants making films for
Sony TropJnr and other films screened internationally in
Texas, Berlin, San Francisco, New York, Vancouver, Indonesia,
Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and of course throughout Australia.
FEES
The current workshop fee is $295 (inclGST), but may be more
or less depending on the type of course. Some free workshop
places (subsidised by the Department of Family, Community
Services and Indigenous Affairs) are available to disadvantaged
young people upon application.

CHANNEL
FREE SPECIAL PROJECTS
Project fees are subsidised through Metro Screen
and the Department of Education, Employment & Workplace
Relations.
Channel Free is dedicated to helping marginalised, disadvantaged
or ‘at risk’ youth gain access to digital film
technology; empowering them to tell their own stories and
get their voices heard in the wider community. Projects
run over a period of three to six months and provide free
intensive training in digital film and new media production,
mentorship with experienced professionals and practical
filmmaking experience.
In 2007 Channel Free worked in co-production with Twenty10
youth support to produce a short drama, ‘Stray’
which has already screened at over fifteen international
film festivals, been packaged as a DVD resource for young
people and picked up a North American distributor!
Involvement in a Channel Free project enables young people
to develop their creativity, self-confidence, teamwork and
technical skills in an inspiring professional environment.
Filmmaking allows them to express themselves through a medium
that transcends barriers in academic ability, literacy,
language and cultural background.

Channel Free
is based at Metro Screen, which is
located in the Paddington Town Hall
[Australia], alongside the Chauvel
Cinema + Radio 2RES. The central Sydney
location is well serviced by public
transport + close to restaurants,
cinemas, cafes + galleries.
HOW
TO GET TO METRO SCREEN BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT
From Museum train station [Liverpool
St exit] catch either the 380, 378
or 333 bus up Oxford St to Paddington
Town Hall. Alternatively catch the
352 bus via Newtown + Surry Hills.
The bus stop is directly opposite
the Paddington Town Hall with the
Metro Screen entrance located through
the Chauvel Cinema entrance on Oatley
