Generator

Stories cannot tell themselves. But they are trying.

Metro Screen is offering an unprecedented opportunity for geographically isolated teens to get into the screen industry, and we want your community to be a part of it!

GENERATOR is a game where teens learn about storytelling and scriptwriting as it applies to the film, television, interactive and online sectors. Teens get to interact in a virtual world environment, hunt for ‘lost stories’ online, and create dynamic content including blogs, videos, and audio podcasts.

This program was devised in response to an overwhelming number of regional organisations imploring Metro Screen to send out our Mobile Unit tutors out to their communities. We know from years of experience that geographically isolated, at-risk and Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander teens respond to screen education. This model is a chance for us to reach multiple regional Australian communities at once, combating the isolation that is often a reality for creative regional teens by connecting them not only with
Metro Screen’s state of the art screen education services, but also with other young people like them in other regional areas.

We’re looking for organisations like yours to be our local Community Leaders on the ground in your region. Metro Screen will provide full support for your nominated Community Leader, including putting you in touch with community leaders in other localities so that you can knowledge-share throughout this pilot program.

To be an eligible Community Leader organisation, you need to fulfil the following requirements:

  • You need to have one or more late-model PC computers with a fast internet connection where teens can access the virtual world and the relevant websites they’ll need to visit for the game.
  • You need to have one member of staff who is willing to be our local community contact. This involves sourcing local teens (13-17) who may be interested in the program and facilitating Metro Screen supporting them through the program by being a responsible, informed adult that the young person has access to.

Accredited training

While this program is a free service open to up to 50 regional teens, Metro Screen is delighted to announce that we have four scholarship places open for exceptionally keen young people. This program is based around two storytelling units in the Cert III in Screen + Media course. As such, by completing all the games in the task, the four teens enrolled in the scholarship stream will gain two units towards that qualification.

Please note: every teen who completes the game in full will receive a Certificate of Participation from Metro Screen.

Set on an overgrown post-apocalyptic island, Generator combines virtual world gaming with transmedia expression to deliver an e-Learning experience that results in the real-world awarding of two units of the Cert III in Screen and Media:

CUFWRT302A: Write simple stories
CUFWRT301A: Write content for a range of media

Generator is the 2011 pilot project initiated by Metro Screen and supported by generous funding from the Australian Flexible Learning Framework.

E-merge

E-merge is part of a 2009 pilot project initiated by Metro Screen in coordination with the Australian Flexible Learning Framework. Metro Screen came up with the idea of creating E-merge to give anyone with an internet connection the opportunity to learn about screen production. Designed to be engaging and enjoyable, the e-learning activities on E-merge are also aimed at building learners’ industry knowledge to help them start their career.

The E-merge activities have been created to match the level of two vocational qualifications, the Certificate III in Media and the Certificate IV in Screen and Media. The E-merge hub may also assist learners to study and prepare for assessment.
