Young Filmmakers is Metro Screen’s youth program, providing access to screen technology, training and mentorship for young people aged 11–16. Our programs are industry based, which means you will have hands-on learning with professional equipment and experienced tutors. Metro Screen's Young Filmmakers featured twice on Ch 7's Saturday Disney and Sydney Weekender in 2010. 

 

TROPJR 2010

Metro Screen film makes Trop Jr finals. 
 Metro Screen teamed up with Maroubra’s Kool Kids Club to mentor a group of 11 – 16yr olds and produce 2 OF ME.
Synopsis:
What happens when you realise there are 2 of you, or 2 of Me? When Braidon discovers, his other half, strange things start to happen. Only his trusty pals with the power to unravel mystery and mayhem will lead him to his other half and Dr Strange’s testing lab.

TROPPJR 2009

Synopsis:

Famous Hollywood director, Winston Kubrike, waxes lyrical about his new masterpiece.  When the film fails miserably, however, he is less than complimentary about some of his key crew members.

In 2009 Metro Screen Young Filmmaker graduates had two other films screen in the TropJr finals.

  • '142 Hours' made by Jasmin-Johanna Mobbs who last year won a place in our April School Holiday Workshop. Synopsis: An adventure prone single mum and her equally intrepid four kids aged 7–15 take the Trans-Siberian train journey through China, Mongolia and across Russia.
  • 'MyFace' produced with young people in Redfern as a specially commissioned piece to screen outside of competition at TropJr. Check out Channel Free for details on MyFace

School holiday workshops

Young Filmmakers runs extensive workshops in film, TV, online and portable media during the January, April, July and October school holidays. The three-day intensive workshops enable participants to write, act, shoot, light, direct, edit and produce their own films. Participants will join an established collective of over 300 young Sydney filmmakers and become part of the Young Filmmakers community, receiving regular updates and invites to screenings and special events. An added touch of glamour and excitement for the school holiday workshops have seen participants making films and winning at Sony TropJr.

Enrolment + Fees


The Flickerfest Young Filmmakers Workshop costs $345 [incl. GST] per person, restricted to those aged 11-17 years of age. Enrolments can be submitted online or via fax, email or post.

Full payment is required in order to secure any place in the workshop, and due to the limited places available, it is on a first in first served basis. We also provide subsidised places by the Department of Family, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, available to disadvantaged young people. Please contact us for application details.

Tutors
Our tutors are professional filmmakers who combine their expertise in filmmaking with a passion for teaching young people. We provide instruction in the principles of visual storytelling, as well as teaching participants the technical skills needed to use the latest equipment and filmmaking software. We aim to inspire and develop the confidence,creativity and storytelling abilities of all Holiday Workshop participants. All tutors have acquired the compulsory Working With Children's Check.
