Metro Screen MOBILE UNIT Projects 2004

METRO SCREEN HURSTVILLE: ENTER THE DRAGON FILM FESTIVAL [Jan 2004]
Funding was received from Hurstville City Council and the FTO to run a 19 hour video production workshop through Metro’s Mobile Unit. This initiative was part of the Enter the Dragon annual festival held at Hurstville. Three short videos were produced.

METRO SCREEN THE “COWSHED” VIDEO YOUTH PROJECT [Jan 2004]
The “Cowshed” Video Youth Project evolved from a partnership between the Metro Screen Mobile Unit and Holroyd City Council. “The Cowshed” is part of the Wentworthville Youth Services, established to empower young people through the provision of information, support and resources in order to give them a voice and recognition as equal members of society. A 25 hour video production workshop was conducted with disadvantaged youth aged 12-22 for local youth from the Holroyd area. The outcomes of this project allowed students to produce three videos using their own scripts/script concepts.

METRO SCREEN GOULBURN: Certificate III in Cinema Projection [Apr 2004]
In response to the expanding revival of cinema activity in regional NSW, Metro Screen received further funding from the NSW Film and Television Office to run a second Cinema Projectionist program in regional NSW. The training program was designed for people working or volunteering as cinema projectionists. The course combines technical and theoretical training with hands-on experience and covers a range of practical topics including the operation of various projection formats as well as the care and maintenance of both film and cinema equipment. On completion of the formal coursework, students developed their practical skills through work experience attachments with local cinemas.

METRO SCREEN SHOOTING WEST: Penrith Regional Gallery [Apr 2004]
Shooting West is an opportunity for aspiring western Sydney filmmakers to participate in workshops, seminars, and film screenings, as well as meet with filmmakers, industry representatives and celebrity guests to get an understanding and first point of entry into the world of film and television. The Mobile Unit provided taster workshops in Video Production, Editing with Final Cut Pro, and Web Design with Dreamweaver. The workshops were aimed at beginners, providing a hands-on opportunity to explore the basics. Metro Screen also curated a screening program of works from the Raw Nerve Short Film Initiative, Channel Free, and the Indigenous and Multicultural Mentorship Schemes which screened throughout the day.

GOULBURN: Certificate IV in Assessment & Workplace Training: Train the Trainer [May 2004]
A Workplace Assessor and Training course was run in Goulburn, as a follow up to the Certificate III in Cinema Projection. The qualification is useful to participants working within all areas of cinema operations to manage themselves and others, and to pass on the skills learnt through the Cinema Projectionist course to their co-workers and others within their community.

PLAY NOW/ACT NOW REGIONAL SEMINARS. Multiple sites.
Through its Play Now/Act Now project with NSW Health Metro Screen ran 6 regional workshops in Newcastle, Wollongong, Armidale, Dubbo, Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay promoting the Getting Smashed festival for young people to make a short film about the issues of alcohol and drugs. The workshops resulted in 11 regional entries demonstrating the enthusiasm for filmmaking in regional NSW.

NYNGAN: Outback Flicks “Sustainable Living Project” [Nov 2004]
This three day program for young people covered the short film making process from conceptualisation and storyboarding to editing the final product. The program was funded by the NSW Department of Environment and Conservation “It’s a Living Thing” program, and was run in conjunction with the Bogan Shire Council. The three completed films focused on environment and sustainability and were used to educate the community of Bogan Shire about these issues.
